A new wave of Russian missile and drone strikes has plunged Kyiv and much of Ukraine into darkness, reigniting fears of a harsh winter ahead. Overnight, explosions ripped across the country, damaging energy infrastructure and forcing millions to confront another round of power outages just as temperatures begin to drop. Further south, in the Zaporizhzhia region, tragedy struck when a seven-year-old boy lost his life and seven others were wounded. The central Cherkasy region also reported ten injuries, painting a grim picture of the wide-reaching devastation.
Russia’s Defense Ministry described the assault as a “massive strike” deploying so-called high-precision and even hypersonic missiles. Officials claimed the operation was aimed at “energy facilities supporting Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.” Critics, however, call this justification misleading at best—pointing out that civilian energy networks have again borne the brunt of the assault. More than 5,800 residential buildings in Kyiv lost power on Friday morning, with the eastern districts hit hardest. Images released by Ukraine’s emergency services showed firefighters battling fierce blazes at a ten-story apartment building.
The chaos didn’t stop with electricity. Water supplies failed in more than 7,000 buildings across the capital, leaving thousands without access to clean water for hours before service was gradually restored. Public transportation also suffered; parts of Kyiv’s iconic metro system shut down after sustaining damage from the strikes. In response, “invincibility tents” have reappeared across the city, offering hot drinks, charging stations, and a sense of solidarity amid the blackouts.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, Svitlana Hrynchuk, described the situation as a continuation of Russia’s three-year campaign to terrorize civilians through energy deprivation. “Exactly three years ago, our power grid endured its first massive strike—and today, Russia continues to use frost and darkness as its tools,” she explained, as repair crews raced to restore vital services.
Officials have enforced emergency power outages throughout Kyiv, surrounding regions, and eight additional oblasts including Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, and Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky warned that Russia’s strategy aims to dismantle Ukraine’s energy foundations entirely, with recent disruptions already affecting gas production and distribution networks.
Speaking to reporters earlier in the week, Zelensky said his administration and utility workers were preparing for further escalations. Later, in an interview with the BBC, he revealed plans to ask UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to join the PURL program—a NATO initiative through which member nations purchase arms from the United States to supply Ukraine. While commending the United Kingdom for its enduring support, Zelensky stressed the importance of sending a clear message of continued commitment and implementing tougher sanctions against Moscow.
Downing Street confirmed that Sir Keir and Zelensky held a discussion, agreeing that fresh waves of sanctions in the coming days and weeks could further tighten the screws on Russia and increase economic pressure on the Kremlin.
