Sunn O)))'s New Era: Unveiling 'Eternity's Pillars' and More (2025)

Sunn O))) Signs with Sub Pop, Releases New Tracks: Listen to 'Eternity’s Pillars', 'Raise the Chalice', and 'Reverential'

Sunn O))) (https://pitchfork.com/artists/3984-sunn-o/) has joined forces with the esteemed Seattle-based label Sub Pop (https://www.subpop.com/) and unveiled their latest creations. The trio's new tracks, 'Eternity’s Pillars', 'Raise the Chalice', and 'Reverential', are now available on streaming platforms and as a limited-edition 12" vinyl single. Stream the tracks below.

In a press statement, the band explained the origins of these songs: 'Eternity’s Pillars' draws inspiration from the 1980s TV show hosted by Alice Coltrane, a jazz pioneer and spiritual leader, who believed in music's transformative power. 'Raise the Chalice' is a nod to Ron Guardipee, a Northwest icon, and his rallying cry from the 1990s. 'Reverential' is a tribute to the heavy burdens carried by those who came before, with music and art as their tools of expression.'

Sunn O))) has been a duo since the departure of founding member Greg Anderson, and they've been busy with recent releases. In 2019, they released 'Life Metal' and 'Pyroclasts', and in 2021, they documented their BBC Radio 6 session as the live album 'Metta, Benevolence'. 'Life Metal' was praised as one of the best metal albums of 2019 (https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/best-metal-albums-2019/).

As a music writer and cultural critic, I'm excited to see what new directions Sunn O))) will take with Sub Pop. All products featured on Pitchfork are editor-selected, and purchases through our links may earn us a commission.
